Blue-chip gallery Lévy Gorvy Dayan (LGD) is closing its Hong Kong branch, the Financial Times reports. The gallery will continue to maintain its outposts in New York and London. Rebecca Wei, the gallery’s Asian operations chief, told the FT that a post-pandemic shift in customer activity was behind the closure of its Hong Kong space.

“Client behavior has changed,” Wei said. “When I started [in 2020], people wanted to see the specialists and works in person. Since the pandemic, they have got used to long-distance purchasing and now want you to go to them.” According to the FT, Wei, a former Asia chair at Christie’s, will remain based in Hong Kong and will continue to work with the gallery, though in exactly what capacity remains to be seen. “We are being realistic about how I should spend my time—which is face to face with clients,” Wei told the publication.

Gallery cofounder Dominique Lévy in a statement reprinted in part by Artnews said, “We are not closing our presence in Hong Kong; we are closing our current space and adjusting to the shifts in needs of our artists and clients. We will continue our dynamic partnership with Rebecca Wei and reaffirm our commitment to artists including Tu Hongtao, but in an agile and nimble manner that better responds to our artist and client needs.”

Established in 2021 as Lévy Gorvy Dayan Rohatyn (LGDR) by veteran dealers Dominique Lévy, Brett Gorvy, Amalia Dayan, and now-former partner Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, who exited the operation in 2023, the gallery was initially seen as an attempt on the part of its founders to pool resources and compete with such international megagalleries as Gagosian, Pace, and David Zwirner. Among the artists on its roster are Terry Adkins, N. Dash, Jenna Gribbon, Joel Mesler, Senga Nengudi, Pierre Soulages, Pat Steir, Alison Watt, and Zhang Zipiao.
