MANIFESTA 15 REVEALS PROGRAM AND PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

The organizers of Manifesta have announced the program and named the eighty-five artists and collectives participating in the peripatetic biennial’s fifteenth iteration, set to take place in Barcelona September 8–November 24. The event will investigate the region’s built and natural environs and their relation to one another and to the world at large, with a focus on how they might be improved.

Spanning sixteen venues and twelve cities in the Barcelona metropolitan area, the edition is being overseen by director Hedwig Fijen, Portuguese curator Filipa Oliveira, and eleven representatives, each from one of the participating cities. Manifesta 15 will be broken out into three thematic and geographic sections: “Balancing Conflicts” (Llobregat Delta), “Cure and Care” (Collserola Mountain Range and the Vallès area), and “Imagining Futures” (Besòs River and the northeastern coastline). As well, each participating city will be the subject of a so-called Focus Week. The municipalities will have the opportunity to display their cultural power through a series of special events, exhibitions, and public activities.

While the onetime Gustavo Gili publishing house in Barcelona will serve as the exhibition’s main venue, “Balancing Conflicts” will be staged in Casa Gomis, a private villa dating to 1963 and designed by Catalan architect Antonio Bonet; “Cure and Care” will be mounted in the ninth-century Monastery of Sant Cugat; and “Imagining Futures” will take place in Tres Xemenies (The Three Chimneys), relics of a vacated 1970s thermal power station occupying the coast between Barcelona and Badalona.
