Organizers of the Bangkok Art Biennale have named the forty-five local and international artists participating in the event’s fourth edition. Titled “Nurture Gaia” and led by Thai curator and art historian Apinan Poshyananda, who helmed the three previous editions that have taken place since the Biennale’s 2018 founding, this year’s iteration is set to open October 24 and will run through February 25, 2025. The event will center works themed around animism, ecopolitics, and supernatural mysticism and will investigate issues including divine femininity, ecological resilience, biodiversity, and the debate around the concept of “nature versus nurture.”

Among the participating artists from Thailand are multidisciplinary artist Dusadee Huntrakul, who shapes bronze and ceramics into organic forms; installation and video artist Som Supaparinya, who explores history and the impact of human activity; and environmental activist and installation artist WISHULADA, known for her large-scale works made from waste materials. Artists from outside the country include French Algerian multimedia artist Adel Abdessemed, whose practice addresses violence, among other issues; South Korean sculptor Choi Jeong Hwa, known for works featuring large, bright flowers; and American artist Chitra Ganesh, whose drawings and paintings investigate topics such as feminism, queer theory, mythology, and science fiction.

This year’s Biennale will take place across nine venues, among them the ancient heritage sites Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and Wat Prayoon, known for its massive white chedi, or stupa. The Bangkok Art and Culture Center, Museum Siam, the National Gallery of Thailand, the National Museum Bangkok, and Queen Sirikit National Convention Center will host exhibitions, as will the hypermodern One Bangkok development.
